Oncology is made up of two Greek words; Oncus (ὄγκος), meaning mass, and the suffix logi (λογία) meaning to know, and is a branch of medicine that studies tumors and cancer, and a physician specializing in this field is called an oncologist. They are also popularly called cancer doctors. Oncology deals with the following:
- Diagnosing any type of cancer by measuring biomarkers, biopsy, and various imaging and radioisotope scans
- Treatment (including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and other medical procedures)
- Checking cancer patients after treatment (examination, test, scan, and imaging)
